After almost fifteen years, we are finally jumping into the world of cell phones with our first-born. As a follower of Christ and one who has seen the ways that cell phones can lead kids astray, change their priorities and personalities, and provide plenty of easy and “private” ways for kids to sin against God, Adelade is dipping a toe into these waters with caution and a heart that wants to please the Lord. For that I am so grateful. I want her to understand that God’s grace is enough for any mistakes that she will make as she begins to navigate the world of text messaging, social media, and the internet. But, I also don’t want her or Chad and me to enter into this new era lightly. I want us to come to this moment with hearts and minds that are tuned to God’s word and His commands for living according to it.

So, I didn’t want to create a document for her to sign that I called a “contract.” Not because I think there’s necessarily anything wrong with that, but because I don’t want this to be set up in her mind or ours as a list of do’s and don’ts. I don’t want her to view the phone as a wicked machine bent on her destruction. Nor do I want her to feel like if she fails in any of these areas that she is, then, a failure. The truth is that we all face temptations to say what we shouldn’t, to react in the wrong ways, to look at things that aren’t edifying, to waste time, to be lazy, to ignore our family, and to hurt our witness as Christians while we use and live with and enjoy cell phones.

This is why you should use a smartphone contract for teenager, because it can help your child understand what it means to own a phone.

Imagine this scenario: It’s late at night and your phone lights up on the nightstand next to you. You open the text to read the following message:

“Hey, I just saw photos of your daughter being shared on social media, and I don’t think you want these photos out there!”

What follows is a flurry of emotions, including panic, as you attempt to figure out what has happened and how you can make this potentially life-altering situation go away.

Technology also changes so quickly that it can also be hard to keep up with the latest devices, social networking sites, and apps.

“Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.” – Psalm 4:23

At some point, every family will face the question, “?” Some better questions might be, “Is my child ready for the onslaught of temptations and opportunities for connection? Are we, as parents, ready for some “techno-ference,” intentional conversations, and essential boundaries?” My kids both have phones now and we have had ongoing conversations about limits, responsibilities, and freedoms that first began with a phone contract. While it may sound restrictive, a phone contract is really an opportunity to pursue true freedoms together.

We got our tween a cell phone. I was uncertain but I really had no logic that went along with it and was letting my mom emotions run the show.  When talked about the real reasons he should have one, we knew for our almost eleven year old to have a cell phone AND a cell phone contract.

I wanted to until he was closer to 13 but realized that I really just liked that number because it was a teen number. The decision to get any child a cell phone is a big one and deserving of a cell phone contract to make sure both parents and child are clear on the rules of cellular engagement.
